Immigrating From Latvia
My name is Anna Vinski I'm a 37 year old professor in the United States but I'm originally from Latvia. I currently live in the city of Los Angeles in California. Back in Latvia I did not make much money teaching at the University of Latvia. I made barely enough to survive. To many honest intelligent Latvians are finding that they cannot support their families in Latvia. America is a chance to fulfill a dream. My husband and i both believed that their are better opportunities for our children. Also my husband has needed surgery on his knee for many years now, his brother urged him to get it done here because there are many well-educated, highly trained doctors in the United States. Immigrating to the U.S was very different from what i was used to. It brought many positive & negative aspects in my life. For example, a positive aspect is that my daughter wants to succeed in life. She plays the piano and dreams of someday go to the Julliard School of Music in New York so that makes me really proud of her that shes using this opportunity of being in a country where you can do anything that you dream of. Also lucky for me and my family other immigrants from Russia, Poland, Croatia, and Hungary settled near us that make us feel more welcomed because we've become very good friends. My kids have assimilated here in the US and despite our struggle of learning English their only very little negative aspects. For example back in Latvia people knew us and got invited to dinner parties but here we’re nobody. Worst part of being here was when i tried to get a job at one of the many universities here in LA but rejected me because the universities tell me that my English is not good enough. With all the negative and positive aspects of migrating here i believe that it was the best decision to migrate to the United states from Latvia for my family.
